Your Heavy Workout May Be Making You Less Horny

Your strenuous sweat session might be impacting your desire to get hot and heavy outside the gym, a new study has revealed.

Researchers from the University of North Carolina have found that men who exercise rigorously have lower libidos than those who do low intensity workouts. This is because men reach a point during physical exercise at which they are too exhausted to have sex or simply aren’t interested in doing the deed anymore.

Researchers asked 1,100 U.S. men to complete an online poll that included questions about their sex lives and their exercise habits.

Lead researcher Anthony Hackney said the results were conclusive that men who exercised less intensely had higher libidos. Those who exercised for shorter periods also had higher libidos.

There was a clear ‘tipping point’ at which exercise began negatively impacting a man’s sex life, said Hackney. He hopes further research will more clearly define when exactly this tipping point tends to occur.

"Exposure to higher levels of chronic intense and greater durations of endurance training on a regular basis are significantly associated with a decreased libido scores in men,” reads the study, published in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise.

While women are typically the ones asked about their exercise habits when trying to conceive a child, Hackey said it might be time to re-think this process.

"Fertility specialists will often ask a woman about whether and how much she exercises,” he said. "Based on our data, we think they should also be asking the man."
