Yoga And Beer Is The Pairing You Never Knew You Needed

It’s a universally known fact that everything is better with beer – and yoga instructors everywhere are starting to catch on.

‘Beer yoga’ – where participants reward themselves with a sip of suds after coming up from downward dog – is gaining popularity in studios the world over after being introduced by Berlin’s BierYoga.

The company, which was started by a pair of beer-loving yogis, bills itself as “the marriage of two great loves – beer and yoga… both centuries-old therapies for the body, mind and soul.”

The idea apparently came to the founders after they attended Burning Man.

“Basically, I played around with it in my room with a Radler [half beer, half lemonade or soda],” Jhula, BierYoga’s co-founder, told Vice. “I took standard vinyasa sequences, which most people have done a bunch of times, and tried to figure out everywhere I could work beer in there.”

The company recently expanded to Australia afters seeing tremendous success at home, and plans to offer classes at bars, birthday parties and outdoor venues across the country.

Several breweries in the U.S. have also jumped on the beer yoga bandwagon. Take Beer Yoga LLC in Colorado, for example, which offers craft beer and yoga sessions, or San Diego’s Hoppy Yoga, where yoga sessions are accompanied by post-class beer socials.

If your local studio hasn’t caught up to the trend yet, there's nothing stopping you from finding inner peace with a yoga mat and a six-pack in your own living room.
