As a society, we are always being told that keeping up with the news is a true sign of a good and intelligent person. This is why we have satellites, fiber optic cables, and networks of news bureaus all across the world that inform us with urgency of any current news or events. Individuals are also equipped with personal devices that allow them to constantly monitor stories in real time. News allows us to see a lot more, though some also believe we are simultaneously seeing a lot less.
This constant flow of news and information from without interferes with our ability to see equally important pieces of news from within. Feelings, ideas, and thoughts all require courage to confront, which threatens to make us anxious, uncomfortable, or sad if we were to learn more about them. This is why people use the news without to silence the news within, the most prestigious excuse created to never spend any time roaming freely inside our own minds. So it seems wrong to think there are things more important than the news, but there is: our own lives.
