Boaty McBoatface might not sound like the name of a submarine designed for research, but it is. Former BBC radio presenter James Hand suggested the name and, was then surprised when it won the public poll. The Natural Environment Research Council designed a small, yellow submarine to explore the depths of the Orkney Passage in the Southern Ocean. Once at the seafloor, the submarine will transmit the data it collects to researchers via a radio link. They hope this data will help them understand how the ocean is affected by global warming.
