What Are They *Really* Smoking?

We take a look at what the actors were reportedly lighting up in these classic films and shows.

The Breakfast Club: Ally Sheedy, Molly Ringwald and the rest of the Club rolled up oregano for the classic detention-room smoking scene (kinda like real high school kids.)

Pineapple Express: Seth Rogan, who also brags about having gotten high with Jonah Hill, Sarah Silverman, Paul Rudd, and Snoop, says he smoked actual weed during the filming of Pineapple Express. Not so for Rogan's co-star James Franco - apparently, it's not his thing.

Weeds: According to casting director Katja Blichfeld, actors mainly smoked herbal cigarettes; however, for the fat ounces necessitated by the plot, they used prop moss, spray-painted and bound together. "And they would paint individual hairs — you know how weed has purple hairs or whatever," script writer Stephen Falk told Flavorwire. "They'd get really granular with how detailed it could be."

Cheech and Chong: No kidding: the original stoner duo smoked actual marijuana while filming back in the 1970s. These days, they just pretend to light up during live shows.

Broad City. They don't say specifically what they smoke/vape on the hit show, but it's definitely not cannabis. Broad City star Illana Jacobson tells the Vulture, "We're, like, running a business," says Glazer. "That would be so irresponsible to get high. All these people who are giving us their time and their skill and we're getting high? That's crazy!"

Also: while she and Abbi Jacobson appreciate the gesture, they don't want to get high with you.

"People think I want to blaze all the time with them," says Glazer. "Which is like, I don't. I'm obviously going to be so nervous about that right now."

Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH) isn't the most vocal cannabis advocate on the 2020 presidential campaign trail, but you shouldn't take that as a lack of support for marijuana legalization. Unlike many of the top contenders for the upcoming Democratic primaries, Ryan hasn't filed any of his own cannabis legalization bills.
