Weedmaps to Open 'Museum of Weed' in Hollywood this Summer

Weedmaps—the people who help you figure out where the nearest cannabis dispensary is—will open a temporary cannabis museum in Hollywood this August.

Opening day for Weedmaps' 'Museum of Weed' is quickly approaching. Come August 3rd, folks interested in getting a better understanding of how we got to where we are today can take a walk though America's turbulent cannabis history. As Weedmaps CEO Chris Beals said, it's important to recognize that what is now an increasingly legal substance now was once treated much differently.

"We're at this point now where there is some cannabis normalization, where they're already starting to forget that there have been people who have been in jail (because of prohibition)," Beals told CNN Business.

Visitors to the museum will be taken on a chronological walk through cannabis history and will get a glimpse of key eras: from early historical uses of the plant, to the "Reefer Madness" and War on Drugs eras, to the current legalization movement.

Beyond providing historical education, the Museum of Weed will also feature the interactive "Plant Lab," which will allow visitors to get a little closer to the tech and science of cannabis.

And while Beals said he wants people to come away with a sense of just how far things have come. he also hopes people will see that legalizing cannabis isn't the end.

"[Legalization is] most definitely not a panacea for all of the social issues that have been associated with prohibition," he said. "I think there's a bit of a myth that once you legalize cannabis that the disparate enforcement of cannabis laws disappears."

And if you want proof that stigmas around cannabis still exist, Beals said all you have to do is look at the museum's policy of only letting people in who are 18 or older. It's a compromise they had to make in order to meet local permit requirements and "a good indicator that the stigma around cannabis continues."

The Museum of Weed will run from Aug. 3 to Sept. 29 at 720 North Cahuenga Boulevard, LA. Admission is $35.

Hiding behind big sunglasses, I slunk to my car and started the engine. The bag containing a month’s worth of flower and edibles that I had just bought at Weedology, a legal dispensary in Ontario, Oregon was stuffed hastily into my bag; I dared not unseal it to survey the goods. Though my heart was pounding, I forced myself to cut a slow track out of the parking lot.

Can we see some ID please?
