Keeping Up With the Kardashians has been criticized for being stupid, vapid, materialistic, stupid, fake and stupid. But now apparently it can also be criticized for actually making people who watch it worse human beings.
A new study was conducted to see how watching television programming that promotes a materialistic worldview affects a viewer's perception of poor people. The study found that people who watch "materialistic media messages" (such as Keeping Up With the Kardashians) are less likely to support welfare programs than people who do not watch those types of shows. Viewers of these materialistic shows are also more likely to support proposals that cut or add extra barriers to welfare programs.
Essentially, if you watch Keeping Up With the Kardashians, you think poor people should suck it up.
Ironically, this isn't the first time that scientific studies have shown that watching materialistic shows are bad for people. Previous studies show watching these types of programs increases body dissatisfaction, decreases well-being in children and leads to increased levels of stress, life dissatisfaction, and anxiety.
The researchers of this new study note that previous studies only examined how watching shows like Keeping Up With the Kardashians affects a person at the individual level. But they note that their study shows that watching these shows actually affects the broader society and can make things worse for everyone, not just the person watching it.
So basically when someone criticizes Keeping Up With the Kardashians as trash that's dumbing down Americans, they're actually one hundred percent right!
