Now Russia is Messing with the Power Rangers

The new Power Rangers movie just premiered and everyone is excited except for Russia. The Russian distributor of the film announced that the film’s original age restriction of 16+ had been bumped to 18+. Although the distributor did not give a reason for the change, the move comes right after it was announced that the movie features an LGBTQ+ protagonist. In 2013, Russia passed an anti-gay law banning “propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations.” The Russian legislator behind this bill, Vitaly Milonov, reportedly rallied against the reboot and expressed hate toward the film’s director, Dean Israelite. Israelite spoke about his interest in representing the modern teenager experience, which includes the LGBTQ+ community.
