The legalization movement has made great gains in the last few years, with four states and Washington, D.C., legalizing recreational cannabis and more than half of the states legalizing medical marijuana. The following map illustrates the progress that has been made.
And now voters have the chance to more than double the number of states where recreational marijuana is legal, with votes in five states: Arizona, California, Maine, Massachusetts, and Nevada. Two states (Arkansas and North Dakota) have the chance to join the long list of states that have legalized medical marijuana. Florida and Montana are holding votes to expand access to their already-legal programs.
Imagine all the states vote yes. That would mean that 75 million people countrywide (more than 23 percent of the total population) would live in states where recreational marijuana was legal. Here is what the map would look like if the ballot initiatives were all passed in the election November 8:
