Speed Dating For Cannabis Growers? This Canadian City Is Helping Patients Find 'The One'

Just like in matters of the heart, finding The One when it comes to cannabis growers is no simple task.

A not-for-profit group in Calgary, Alberta is trying to make that process a little easier by hosting speed-dating style events for medical marijuana patients and designated growers in the Canadian province.

In Canada, licensed medical marijuana patients can get their medicine one of three ways: by growing a limited supply of the plant themselves, by ordering it from one of the country’s 36 major licensed producers, or by designating someone to grow it for them.

The Calgary Cannabis Society held its first weed speed-dating event last week for those interested in pursuing the latter option.

Throughout the evening, growers sat down with prospective clients at designated stations for 10-minute time slots to discuss their organic-, hydroponic- or locally-grown cannabis.

“Just like in love… I think there’s [a cannabis grower] for everybody,” Lisa Mamakind-Adams, interim director of the Calgary Cannabis Society, told Civilized.

Finding that grower can prove extremely difficult in a part of the world that doesn’t offer social spaces for cannabis consumers to gather, said Mamakind-Adams. And when you need a certain kind of cannabis to treat a certain kind of ailment, the stress of that process can quickly become overwhelming.

“This plant is made up of so many compounds and there are so many different strains and ways it can be grown that affect how the medicine is used… and everybody reacts to cannabis differently,” said Mamakind-Adams.

“You might be somebody who requires a high CBD-strain with low THC, but you can’t find that through [Canada’s] licensed producers… some people want their medicine grown just in soil organically just like some people would rather have their fruits and vegetables organically grown.”

Mamakind-Adams said the inaugural event was a hit, having attracted more than a dozen growers and patients. She’s already heard from groups across the country who are interested in hosting similar events.

“This is an inexpensive event that’s very easy to put together, and there’s no reason it can’t be held anywhere in Canada,” she said. “I do hope people sort of take this and run with it.”

There are so many strains of marijuana available it can be nearly impossible to figure out which one is right for you. And sure, a knowledgeable budtender could point you in the right direction, but we think we've figured out a better method for choosing a marijuana strain.
