"We need to cut down on the number of prescriptions for opioids that we're writing," Gupta said. "80 to 90 percent of the world's opioids are consumed in the United States. We're not even 90 percent of the world's population. Just think about that. We don't even have 80 to 90 percent of the world's pain, clearly. But we have all these pills being consumed here."
Gupta also called on physicians to find ways to "dramatically reduce the amount of opioids being prescribed" to combat the crisis. "What we're dealing with now is the worst self-inflicted epidemic in US history," he added.
One way to cut down the supply is to find a safer but equally effective medication. And Gupta thinks that the effective alternate we're looking for is medical marijuana, which he'll discuss as a potential cure for the opioid epidemic in the fourth installment of the documentary series 'Weed' (premiering this Sunday on CNN).
