Legendary comedian Robin Williams once helped the crew scouting shooting locations for Good Will Hunting (1997), and to keep spirits light one night, he went behind the bar at a local tavern and served jokes as well as suds to the surprised patrons.
We only wish that Williams - who was born 65 years ago today - had had the chance to play budtender for a day. His long and wildly successful career as a standup comedian proved that he had more than enough marijuana material to keep dispensary customers laughing while he served up strains.
Here are Robin Williams' best marijuana moments.
1. Cannabis side effects
During his standup routine Weapons of Self Destruction (2009), Williams poked fun at how drugs dispensed by doctors nowadays seem to have more and worse side effects than the illegal drugs that he experimented with in his youth.
"These drugs have side effects that go on for seven days, like [the] tendency to grow another head. When we were growing up, we knew the side effects of the drugs we were taking. Cocaine, side effects were paranoia and ninjas on the lawn. I remember that. Quaaludes, side effects were talking in tongues, English as a second language. I remember that. Marijuana, side effects were laughter, Frosted Flakes. That's all I remember."
2. Hotboxing state parks
In that same 2009 special, Williams also brought up the toll that California's annual wildfires take on firefighters.
"In California this summer, all the state parks caught on fire. Which was sad because these parks are full of weed. It's bad news. Even the guys fighting the fires are like, 'Hahaha, fuck. Oh my God, make another rainbow, Tommy. Even Smokey the Bear's going, 'Only you...[pauses, looks confused]...shit, I knew this.'"
3. Performance-enhancing drugs
In the standup special Robin Williams Live on Broadway (2002), Williams poked fun at the Olympics for barring marijuana as a performance-enhancing drug.
"The only way it's a performance-enhancing drug is if there's a big fucking Hershey bar at the end of the run," he said.
Many of today's athletes would likely disagree since some use cannabis in their training. So Williams' joke is a bit dated, but his impersonation of a ski jumper leaping for a chocolate bar is timeless.
4. Alcohol versus Marijuana
Williams made passing references to cannabis over his comedy career. But in the standup special Live at the Met (1986), he went into a lengthy comparison of alcohol and marijuana. There's no way to summarize the whirlwind of impressions that Williams launches into to make his point, so just sit back and enjoy the master comic at work.
