Review: Daily High Club's Tommy Chong Subscription Box is Full of 420-Friendly Stocking Stuffers

While subscription boxes are an objectively good idea, curating truly exceptional monthly mail-outs is a delicate art. Balancing the marketing interests of company clients along with consumer demands, all for a good price, is tricky! Plus, we cannabis consumers are diverse: Who is to say that one cannabis-themed subscription will satisfy the masses when we’re all so different?

Cannabis accessory company Daily High Club’s latest box is brought to you by Tommy Chong, the marijuana icon featured in a various movies (that, admittedly, I've never been able to watch all the way through), and who is a certified cannabis brand in his own right! So of course, given Chong's gravitas, I was curious to see what was inside the box.

In my eyes, the most significant item was a train-shaped bong. I thought this might have been a nod to when Chong played a deputy in Railroad to Hell: A Chinaman's Chance (yes, that's real movie), though it could also be that what they’re calling the Chong Express is a reference to the Polar Express? Whatever may be the inspiration behind the bong, the bowl is nice and far from the mouth opening for those of us who don’t like our eyelashes or hair close to flames.

The box also contains a fresh-smelling car air freshener that is “Christmas”-scented and features a loose drawing of Chong wearing a Santa hat. Additionally, it featured a quality, refillable lighter and a useful plastic portable grinder that even has a little kief chamber!

I also love the Zen Effen Vaporpaper, nestled into the corner of the box, which is tasteless, ultra-thin hemp rolling paper that makes you feel just a teensy bit better about smoking than regular papes. I’m less excited, however, about the box's inclusion of the Royal Blunts XXL OGK wrappers, since they are very heavily flavored with some kind of synthetic grape flavor. Gross! But most of the box's contents are useful —  the RAW cone will also be used over the holidays for sure.

The price is right for all of these goodies, but if you’re buying a subscription box for a friend, shop around for one that’s even more tailored to their personality. Plain ol’ “stoner” doesn’t really mean anything anymore.

I've been covering cannabis for nearly five years, and by now I'm all too accustomed to the impersonal cannabis conference at a stuffy, generic hotel or expo hall, brimming with white guys in suits, and generally lacking in the spirit of well, cannabis. (The woes of legalization, I suppose.) So it was a breath of fresh air when I walked into what felt like a giant atrium in downtown LA for a new kind of cannabis conference. Located in what's called the Valentine Grass Room in an industrial area past the hustle and bustle of the DTLA skyscrapers, Microscopes & Machines (M&M) boasted a diverse array of speakers, from doctors and lawyers to chemists and cultivators on the frontlines of the cannabis industry.
