The Elusive Search For A Predictable High

Many people love marijuana - but like any great love affair, the passion for the plant has its ups and downs. Mary Jane is, after all, an unpredictable lady: who among us hasn't inadvertently embarked on a tailspin of introspection, or giggled uncontrollably at something totally not funny, while high? Not knowing how cannabis will effect you is a major thing that scares off new users.

Enter LucidMood, which bills its Cannabis 2.0 product line as a high that can be customized. The hemp pellets, designed for use in vaporizers, are distinguished by the addition of terpenes - naturally occurring organic compounds found in cannabis and other plants.

The right combination of terpenes, LucidMood claims, "helps persuade the brain to embrace different moods and feelings, such as focus, sociability and euphoria."

The manufacturers claim the Tic-Tac-like pellets, with mood-specific names like Relaxation, Body Buzz, Focus, and Ambition, are the answer for "cannabis pioneers" looking to get high "without precipitating the memory-eroding, dissonant "stoned" feelings that so many people reject."

A cannabis strain for every feeling

LucidMood isn't the only company looking to expand on the idea that there's a cannabis strain for every feeling. Extract manufacturer Ebbu also offers mood-specific offerings like Chill, Bliss, Energy, Giggle, and Create, which it claims, "make experiences as consistent and predictable as those that come with a beer or a cocktail."

Some have decried all this as a silly gimmick, rightly pointing to the dearth of quality research on how, specifically, terpenes affect the brain. But that might not matter to all consumers - who may find the notion of a controlled, predictable high sufficiently intriguing to take part in a LucidMood or Ebbu "tasting party" of their own. There's also the placebo effect to consider - as in, consumers may be more likely to have a certain experience if they're told in advance that's what they should expect.

If cannabis does become totally predictable, it'll be both a blessing for the risk-averse, and a bit of a blow to the badass mental ninja skills that heavy cannabis use often requires users to develop - but at least no one will ever have to navigate their way through Bat Country ever again.
