Plans Dashed For America's First Cannabis Resort

If you planned to light up New Year's Eve at America's first cannabis resort, you may need to find a different party.

We already told you about the South Dakota Santee Sioux Tribe's plans to open the resort in Moody County, about 45 miles north of Sioux Falls. But now they've put plans on hold while tribal leaders seek clarification on federal law.

South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley had long poked holes in the idea for the cannabis resort, pointing out only tribal members would be effected by tribal law: anyone else getting high on the reservation could be prosecuted. South Dakota officials also raised concerns about resort-goers travelling under the influence, which could obviously also result in safety issues and criminal charges.

Tribal officials had outlined plans for tight security on the marijuana lounge to keep a cap on the legal concerns. But they've since decided to suspend the project, which according to some estimates had the potential to generate up to $2-million a month in profit.

Tribe Reportedly Destroys Cannabis Crop

Indian County Today reported on Nov. 8 that after reaching the decision, the tribe purposefully destroyed its first crop, "in order to maintain good faith with all levels of government." However, other media outlets have claimed the fire at the reservation was unrelated to marijuana production.

In December 2014, the U.S Justice Department moved to allow Native American tribes authority to legalize marijuana on tribal land, provided they comply with federal laws.

The Santee Sioux were the first tribal nation in the United States to legalize marijuana.
