Barneys - one of the oldest luxury department stores in America - is adding a cannabis department to one of its California locations. Yesterday, Barneys, which opened shop in 1923, announced plans to open a new cannabis-centric shop-in-shop called 'The High End' at their Beverly Hills store in March.
The High End is basically an upscale headshop. offering a selection of cannabis-infused wellness products from brands like Saint Jane, Foria and Malin + Goetz. You'll also find an assortment of vintage and new smoking paraphernalia lining the shelves: custom blown glass pipes from Siemon & Slazar, horn lighters from Lorenzi and Milano and leather ashtrays from Goibagara will all be in stock for customers looking to upgrade their smoking gear.
"I'm so thrilled that cannabis culture has come so far that it can exist and feel perfectly at home in such a prestigious context as Barneys New York," Beboe co-founder Scott Campbell said in a statement.
But one thing you won't find is actual cannabis. Because Barneys is not a licensed dispensary, it can't sell cannabis flower or extracts. But Barneys has entered a partnership with the designer cannabis company Beboe, which is developing a limited-edition vape pen and strain developed for The High End. Customers can order both from an on-site Beboe rep at Barneys, who will arrange for the products to be ordered through a white-glove delivery service.
"This isn't driven by the flower itself; it's really about creating beautiful products you can keep in the home, whether you smoke weed or not. It’s more about lifestyle," Matthew Mazzucca - Barney's Creative Director - told Digiday.
Barneys is the latest in a number of big name fashion and beauty retailers who have begun to experiment with selling cannabis products. Both Neiman Marcus and Sephora have started stocking cannabis-infused products in recent months and analysts suspect the introduction of cannabis to the established luxury market will be good news for the blossoming industry.
"This level of commitment from Barney's should help turbocharge the growth of the industry and acceptance of CBD in our daily lives," said Christopher Lehmann, cannabis analyst and managing director of Landor's San Francisco office.
The High End is expected to open at Barney Beverly Hills in March and a limited selection of the products available there will eventually make their way to Barneys' online store. The High End will also be coming to Barneys locations in San Francisco, Las Vegas, Boston and NYC in the future as well.
But buyer beware: if you've never shopped at Barneys before, you should know that none of its products on sale are intended for budget-minded customers. (Read: this shit is expensive.)
