Despite online rumors, 'VeggieTales' will not be adding a cannabis plant character to their roster.
Last week, hearsay began swirling about the animated Christian children's cartoon allegedly adding a new character named Cannabis Carl, who would star alongside the likes of Larry the Cucumber and Bob the Tomato. Alas, that rumor was merely a joke originating from a satirical news site called The Babylon Bee:
VeggieTales creators are celebrating the legalization of recreational cannabis use with a new character, Cannabis Carl. The character is a sign of the progress the United States has made on its views on the controversial plant. "Kids are ready for this," said Dreamworks executive Brian Jones, who is overseeing production on the current series.
"Mike and I have had this character in our back pockets since college," Phil Vischer said at a press conference. "America wasn’t ready for Cannabis Carl then, but they’ve finally come around." Mike Nawrocki, the voice of Larry the Cucumber also commented with a long, drawn-out, high-pitched giggle. His eyes appeared red.
The fact-checking website Snopes has since debunked the story and confirmed that the image The Babylon Bee used to reveal the new weed-inspired character is fake.
The first hint that something was amiss should have been that the series appears to have been cancelled back in 2017. So you shouldn't expect any Bible stories with a marijuana twist from these guys anytime soon. A real missed opportunity, if you ask us.
