New York Could Become the First State to Allow Marijuana for Pets

Research suggests that providing marijuana to pets may actually help treat a number of conditions faced by our furry friends, but often laws prevent these treatments from taking place. But in New York, that may no longer be the case.

New York Assemblywoman Amy Paulin introduced a bill last week that would allow veterinarians to prescribe cannabis products to pets. Paulin noted that New York already allows the use of medial marijuana for severe illnesses, and that research shows that many of the same benefits cannabis provides humans can also help animals as well.

Paulin may face an uphill battle though. New York, despite being seen as a liberal state, is fairly conservative when it comes to marijuana. It has one of the strictest medical marijuana programs in the country that only allows the drug for very serious illnesses and does not allow for it to be smoked. Current New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has also been pretty cold to progressive cannabis laws while in office.

Even if the bill fails in New York, Nevada and California are also considering similar bills in the near future. So soon all pets will be able to toke up just like their masters.
