Netflix Is Making Its Biggest Price Increase in Twelve Years

If you're a Netflix user, don't be surprised if the next time you receive a bill for your subscription it's a little more expensive than in the past.

Netflix is raising prices on all 58 million U.S. subscribers starting today. The most popular plan that includes HD streaming is increasing from $10.99 per month to $12.99. The basic Netflix plan is increasing from $7.99 to $8.99, and the premium ultra high-quality service is increasing from $13.99 to $15.99. This is the biggest price increase Netflix has made since it launched its streaming service twelve years ago.

This is the second time in 15 months Netflix has changed its prices, although usually price increases only affected new users while existing users were kept at their original subscription price.

"We change pricing from time to time as we continue investing in great entertainment and improving the overall Netflix experience for the benefit of our members," Netflix said in a statement.

It's probably not too surprising Netflix is asking users for a little more money each month. The streaming service spends an estimated $13 billion per year on content. That includes paying studios for the streaming rights to TV shows and movies, as well as funding their own original productions. And frankly, that $13 billion is probably only going to continue to increase.

This year Netflix is also losing the rights to all Disney-owned content since Disney is making its own streaming app for its content. So perhaps Netflix is rising prices to help continue reign supreme over other streaming services.

Let's just hope they don't use this money to make Bird Box 2.
