U.K. fitness chain David Lloyd Gyms has launched a new class geared toward those who’d rather snuggle up than get their sweat on – a 45-minute Napercise session.
The company was inspired to launch the unconventional ‘fitness’ class – currently trialling in Sidcup, Kent with plans to expand across all its centers – after research revealed that 86 percent of parents reporting feeling fatigued.
Class participants – parents or otherwise – enter a room filled with single beds, “atmospheric” sounds and a temperature that promotes calorie burning during sleep. Classes take place in the mid-afternoon – prime naptime.
“Sleep is a lot more important than people realise,” said Kathryn Pinkham, a sleep expert who collaborated with David Lloyd Gyms on the project.
“We tend to focus on the short-term effects such as being tired or lacking concentration but it is also essential for our long-term physical and mental wellbeing too.
“In addition to a lack of sleep bringing with it a higher risk of developing anxiety or depression, when we are sleep deprived we lack the energy to exercise regularly and also the mental clarity to make good decisions about the food we eat, which could negatively impact our physical health in the long-run.”
If you’re looking to burn more than the “odd calorie”, however, you might want to consider a class that’s at least a little less horizontal in nature
