6 Most Ridiculous Portrayals of Stoners in Pop Culture

If a character in a TV show or movie is a stoner, then they’re probably lazy or constantly snacking or some other stupid marijuana stereotype. But there are some movies and shows that take the stoner depiction even farther.

Here are the six most ridiculous portrayals of stoners in pop culture:

1. Roseanne

Given what’s happened with the recent reboot of Roseanne, it’s probably not surprising that the show also has backwards views on marijuana. But back in the old version of the show, there was an episode where Roseanne and her husband find marijuana and wonder how it got there. It turns out it was theirs the whole time, but they completely forgot about it because cannabis completely erases your memory so you don’t remember bringing marijuana into your house before you even began smoking.

2. Disjointed

Disjointed was a Netflix comedy that aired last year about a marijuana dispensary. The show basically played into all of the old stoner stereotypes and portrayed the workers at a dispensary as a bunch of high, lazy stoners. It showed a complete lack of understanding about the cannabis industry, and it’s probably why no one watched the show and it was cancelled after one season.

3. Friday

Friday may be a classic stoner comedy, but it also perpetuates one of the biggest Hollywood myths about marijuana use: the horrifying hallucination. In Friday, Craig sees the disembodied head of a drug dealer in his cupboard. Is it funny? Sure. But it’s also something that happens after taking mushrooms, not after taking a hit from a joint.

4. The Cosby Show

In a pretty famous episode of The Cosby Show, Cliff and Clair Huxtable find a joint in Theo’s notebook. Theo says it belongs to his classmate, and his friend actually goes to the Huxtable household to admit the whole thing. Yeah right! What stoner would go to someone else’s house and admit to their parents that they’ve been illegally toking up?

5. Reefer Madness

Reefer Madness is a 1936 propaganda film, so obviously it’s going to portray marijuana in an unfair light. Over the course of the movie people using cannabis cause a hit and run accident, kill people, hallucinate violently and slip into madness, all due to marijuana addiction. It is considered one of the worst films ever made.

6. Sex Pot

This really, really bad movie told the story of two teens that find a stash of marijuana that makes people become completely sex crazed. Besides being really, really bad it’s also completely ridiculous.
