If you think your kids are staying up all night because of their phones, you're not alone.

As any parent knows, getting your kid to sleep a solid eight hours can be damn near impossible. Many parents who struggle with sleep-deprived teens pin it on the same thing: screen time. There is so much internet to explore and so little time on earth to do it, after all. Teens can't be blamed for staying up late, smartphone in hand, gazing into its blue lit screen.

Over half of parents blame devices for their child's sleep deprivation, according to new research out of the University of Michigan. The study polled a representative sample of 1,018 parents on whether their teens had trouble sleeping, and what they believed the cause was.

"This poll suggests that sleep problems are common among teens and parents believe late-night use of electronics are a main contributor," says poll co-director Sarah Clark, M.P.H. "Teens' hectic schedules and homework load, as well as anxiety about school performance and peer relationships, also are seen by parents as contributing to sleep problems."

Almost half of parents said that their children consistently had trouble either falling or staying asleep. A quarter of them said it happens a couple days a week, and half said their child experienced sleep troubles three or more days a week.

Other than electronics, many parents believe that their kids held irregular sleep schedules because of extracurriculars, worries over homework and school, and medications or health issues.

Many adults also said they'd been trying to encourage some bedtime best practices: removing electronics from the bedroom, consistent sleep schedules, limiting caffeine and using natural remedies like melatonin.
