You're Probably Misquoting These Famous Movie Lines

There are a handful of quotes from movies that just about everyone knows. Whether it's about making an offer they can't refuse or about how life is like a box of chocolates, everyone thinks they know these famous lines. But are we sure we know them verbatim?

Here are 10 famous movie lines you're actually probably misquoting.

1. "Mirror, Mirror on the Wall, who is the fairest of them all?" Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

Ah yes, everyone remembers this great line from Snow White, except she doesn't actually say "mirror" twice. The actual quote is, "Magic Mirror on the wall, who is the fairest one of all?"

2. "Badges? We don't need no stinkin' badges!" The Treasure of the Sierra Madre

This line is probably more famous for how many times cops in other movies have quoted it. But the actual line is, "Badges? We ain't got no badges! We don't need no badges! I don't have to show you any stinkin' badges!"

3. "Play it again, Sam." Casablanca

Ah yes, one of the most famous movie quotes of all time. Except it's not actually even a real quote. The real quote is, "Play it, Sam. Play As Time Goes By." It doesn't help that Woody Allen made a movie called Play It Again, Sam

4. "A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do." Hondo

You've probably heard this quote said millions of times and never even realized where it originally came from. Unfortunately the real quote has been lost in translation, as it's actually, "A man oughta do what he thinks is best."

5. "Do you feel lucky, punk?" Dirty Harry

Everyone remembers the iconic scene from Dirty Harry where Clint Eastwood points his gun at a criminal and says he doesn't know how many bullets he has left, and then he taunts the man. But we apparently don't remember the actual quote, because he says, "You've got to ask yourself one question: ‘Do I feel lucky?’ Well, do ya, punk?"

6. "We're gonna need a bigger boat." Jaws

I know what you're thinking, there's no way we're misremembering this famous line from Jaws. But it's true. The actual line is, "YOU'RE gonna need a bigger boat," not "we're." It's also famously an ad-libbed line from actor Roy Scheider.

7. "Luke, I am your father." Empire Strikes Back

Millions of Star Wars fans are probably reading this and are outraged. Everyone knows that's what Darth Vader says to Luke Skywalker in one of the most surprising moments in movie history. But Vader doesn't actually say Luke in the quote. He actually says, "No, I am your father."

8. "If you build it, they will come." Field of Dreams

I know what you're thinking. The whole point of Field of Dreams is the guy makes the baseball field and all these ghosts of baseball players come and play on it. So how is the quote wrong. Well, it's actually, "If you build it, HE will come," referring to Kevin Costner's father, who does actually appear at the end of the movie.

9. "Hello, Clarice." Silence of the Lambs

Hannibal Lecter may be one of the most memorable villains in movie history, but apparently his most famous line isn't. Lecter's actual greeting in the movie is, "Good evening, Clarice."

10. "Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get." Forrest Gump

Yes, the life is like a box of chocolates line is iconic. However, the most famous version of this quote (as written above) is never exactly spoken in the movie. The two actual quotes are, "My momma always said life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get." And then another time it goes, "Life is like a box of chocolates, Forrest. You never know what you're gonna get."
