Michael Douglas and Danny DeVito's Friendship Sparked Over a Joint

A lot can happen over a joint, and a lot's happened since Danny DeVito and Michael Douglas first shared a joint in 1967.

"I was on the beach, looking out at the Long Island Sound and this guy walks up to me, with this long head of hair, if you can imagine," Douglas, now 74, tells Cigar Aficionado about the first time he met De Vito, now 73. "He says, 'You get high?' We were both 1967 potheads, so we smoked a joint and that was the beginning of a long, long, friendship."

Since then, DeVito and Douglas have been through a handful of experiences together, such as when DeVito saved his pal's life on the set of the 1984 film Romancing the Stone after Douglas was big by a poisonous snake. The duo also starred together in Solitary Man in 2009 and even lived together while they were training to be actors. And that's not the first time they roomed together: In 1968, the year after they met, DeVito and Douglas shared living quarters in New York City.

Several films, homes, and decades later, from east coast to west coast, the two owe their friendship to that single toke on the beach. Sparking up a joint, in this case, sparked a bromance that's now more than 50 years old.
