Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is considering running for president in 2020. However, his most recent statement about marijuana legalization may put his dreams far from reality.
On Tuesday Bloomberg said legalizing marijuana is "perhaps the stupidest thing anybody has ever done." Bloomberg was discussing drug overdoses in the United States, and noted that overdoses were on the rise. He then tied those rising overdoses to legalizing marijuana.
“Last year, in 2017, 72,000 Americans OD’d on drugs. In 2018, more people than that are OD-ing on drugs, have OD’d on drugs, and today, incidentally, we are trying to legalize another addictive narcotic, which is perhaps the stupidest thing anybody has ever done," Bloomberg said in his full quote.
Bloomberg has continued to push his anti-marijuana views, which definitely puts him at odds with other Democrats considering running for president in 2020. In fact, nearly every major candidate on the Democratic side supports legalizing marijuana, or at the very least decriminalizing it and removing it from the list of controlled substances.
Considering around 70 percent of Democratic voters support legalizing marijuana, Bloomberg is definitely boxing himself into a corner with his continued attacks against marijuana legalization. It also doesn't help that many Democrats seem to want a more progressive champion to represent the party in 2020, as opposed to Hillary Clinton who was seen as too centrist in 2016. So perhaps Bloomberg's history as a centrist (he actually originally ran for mayor as a Republican and then as an Independent) would've doomed him anyway.
Heck, we think the only person actually rooting for Bloomberg is Jeff Sessions.
