Marijuana Is Now Legal In Michigan, But You Won’t Be Able to Buy It For At Least A Year

A month after passing Proposal 1 during the midterm elections, Michigan has become the first midwestern state to legalize adult recreational use of marijuana. While this is undoubtedly another great step for cannabis reform, the state’s approach to legalization is far from perfect.

The biggest roadblock for potential customers in the state is the fact that, well, they can’t really be customers. While the law states that anyone over the age of 21 years old is technically able to smoke it if they have it, there is no legal way for them to obtain it.

The state has given itself until December 6, 2019 to figure out licenses and regulations before allowing recreational retail shops, and have prohibited transporting legally purchased marijuana from another state into Michigan, leaving recreational consumers with no legal options for buying it. Much like in DC, the only way to receive it legally is through a "gift".

Under the new law, you can carry up to 2.5 ounces, store up to 10 ounces, and grow up to 12 plants—although, again, there is no legal way to get them in the first place.

We hate to rain on Michigan’s parade. After all, cannabis legalization is always an exciting thing, but it’s important to recognize that the situation is far from perfect, and there is still plenty of work that needs to be done.

Derived from the part of the cannabis plant that doesn't get you “high” like THC, cannabidiol (CBD) is typically used for health reasons instead of for recreational purposes, and has been found to be especially useful for treating symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. A challenging neurodegenerative disorder, Parkinson’s causes a combination of motor and non-motor symptoms — such as tremors, weakness, stiffness, dizziness, anxiety and sleeplessness — that affect daily life. CBD, typically taken in oil form, has the potential to relieve these symptoms, improving sleep, reducing inflammation and more, which can profoundly help the more than 10 million people across the world suffering.
