Maine Officials Say Restaurant Owner Can't Get Lobsters High on Marijuana

Earlier this week a restaurant in Maine made headlines for announcing that they would begin getting their lobsters high on marijuana before cooking them. But now the state of Maine has decided to jump in and kill the idea.

A spokesperson for the Maine Department of Health in a statement said this plan to get lobsters high before cooking them and serving them to customers is, in fact, illegal. The state said they would "treat food served to consumers at licensed eating places and affected by marijuana, as has been described with this establishment, as adulterated and therefore illegal."

The spokesperson added that the state's regulators do not currently have any information about the health effects of sedating lobsters with marijuana.

The lobster restaurant in question said that through experiments they conducted, lobsters seemed more calm and less agitated when exposed to marijuana smoke than when they were sober. They said this indicated that it was more humane for them to expose the crustaceans to cannabis before killing them.

The staff members at the restaurant have also been eating the lobsters exposed to marijuana, and then taken drug tests afterwards. They say that none of them tested positive for marijuana, indicating that the cooking process does in fact kill the THC in the lobsters.

Others have questioned whether lobsters even feel pain. Scientists say that lobsters do not experience pain in the same way humans do, so subjecting them to this marijuana pain treatment may not even be necessary.
