Proposition 64 And Legal Cannabis In California Pt. 2

While the recreational use of marijuana was legalized in California in 2016, the state's Bureau of Marijuana Control has until January 1, 2018, to issue several types of distribution licenses. This means recreational use technically won't begin until these licenses are created. All recreational dispensaries will not officially be open for business until this time.

While the recreational purchase of marijuana may be postponed until early next year, adults over the age of 21 can now legally consume and grow marijuana in their own home. This means you can legally grow six plants in an enclosed indoor area.

If you aren't up to the task of growing your own, medical marijuana dispensaries continue to be legal and available throughout the state of California. However, in order to be able to purchase weed from a medical marijuana dispensary, you must first receive a prescription from a doctor.

While there are "420 doctors" that specialize in giving medical marijuana licenses, it isn't necessary to seek out any special type of doctor. Any licensed physician in the state of California is able to write a prescription for medical marijuana if they feel it will benefit your current medical state. Patients must pay $45 to receive their medical marijuana card. If for some reason you do not have your medical marijuana card when visiting a dispensary, a rec card can also be accepted. Medical marijuana cards also make it legal to purchase edibles from state certified dispensaries.

You are not required to have a California ID in order to obtain a medical marijuana card. However, it's important to keep in mind that not all dispensaries will accept out-of-state patients, so call ahead if you are not a California resident.

As state laws undergo transitions it is important to frequently look into the current status of cannabis regulations prior to partaking in medical or recreational use.
