Laura Dern Thought She Was Being Pitched a Philosophical Indie Movie Instead of 'Star Wars'

Sometimes it’s best to not overthink things.

Actor Laura Dern recently broke down her biggest film and television roles in a career timeline video from Vanity Fair. In one of the video’s highlights, the actor recalls taking a meeting with director Rian Johnson about a potential project, wherein he began spouting high-minded metaphorical ideas about space and the need to take command of one’s own ship.

Impressed, she asked him where his movie would take place.

“It’s space,” she remembers him saying. “I was like, ‘I know, I hear that. I get it as a parallel, but is it in, like small-town America, or…’”

“He was like, ‘no, no, no…it’s Star Wars.’”

She said that Johnson spent ten minutes describing her role in The Last Jedi before she finally caught on. Once they had that all settled, she described her time working on the movie as “magic.”

“We’ve all pretended in our rooms at six to have a lightsaber,” she said. “What an amazing thing to be part of that.”

Few other entrepreneurs in the cannabis space have their hands in quite as many ventures as Lorne Gertner. Currently dubbed the "godfather of the Canadian cannabis industry," Gertner told Civilized, "If we could live through normalization, we could change the world." Hailing from the fashion industry, this Toronto native says he's on a mission to "make the world a better place through cannabis and design excellence." The only catch is, well, normalizing cannabis — and that's where Gertner's keen eye for style comes in. "In the old days, you were going to be different or you were going to be normal," said Thom Antonio, Gertner's friend, creative director, and collaborator of 35 years.
