Lagunitas Announces New IPA Made with Cannabis

Lagunitas is one of the most well-known breweries in the United States. They're well-known for testing unique flavors to try and make their beers stand out. But their newest IPA will feature an ingredient that many consumers probably don't expect: Cannabis.

"SuperCritical" is the newest IPA recently announced by Lagunitas. The beer is made from "cannabis terpenes," which are compounds found in cannabis that gives it a unique flavor and aroma. Before you ask, no, there is no THC in the terpenes so you won't get the usual effects from consuming marijuana. But the IPA will have distinct citrus and pine flavors to make up for it.

If you're skeptical about the SuperCritical, you should know that beer and marijuana are not actually so different. Hops and cannabis are both part of the same family of plants, and for both of them it's the terpenes that determine the taste of the beer.

As part of the release, Lagunitas partnered with vape cartridge manufacturer CannaCraft, who will make their own line of vape products using hop terpenes that can be found in Laguintas products.

Here's a video Lagunitas released to promote the product:

Unfortunately, the SuperCritical IPA is only available in California at the moment. However, Lagunitas did say they've sent samples of the beer to critics around the country and will look into expanding the product nationwide.

It should be noted that Lagunitas was recently acquired by Heineken, which is based in the Netherlands where marijuana is legal. So really it was only a matter of time before this happened.

Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH) isn't the most vocal cannabis advocate on the 2020 presidential campaign trail, but you shouldn't take that as a lack of support for marijuana legalization. Unlike many of the top contenders for the upcoming Democratic primaries, Ryan hasn't filed any of his own cannabis legalization bills.
