'That Weed Saved Your Life': Kevin Smith Talks About His Heart Attack

Kevin Smith is an extremely talented storyteller (check out his "An Evening With Kevin Smith" DVD if you need proof), so kudos to Stephen Colbert for staying out of his way as he brings his inimitable style to a story that's very close to his heart. As you've probably heard, Smith had a massive heart attack between tapings for an upcoming comedy special, the prophetically-titled 'Silent But Deadly'. He goes through the whole story in the clip above, and it's a must-watch.

Of course, Kevin Smith being Kevin Smith, weed factors into the story. At one point, he asks his doctor about his marijuana habit:

"Did I have a heart attack because of the weed? Cuz I smoked a joint just before the show." And he goes, "No, in fact, quite the opposite. That weed saved your life."

'Silent But Deadly' premieres May 11, 2018 on Showtime at 9pm.

Citing supply shortages, Ontario announced Thursday that they would now be taking a “phased approach” to issuing cannabis retail licenses. Despite earlier claims that they would not be capping the number of licenses for retail pot shops, they announced Thursday that they would, in fact, be limiting the number of licenses dispensed in April to 25. The province says that the licenses will be issued though a lottery system overseen by a third party to “ensure equality and transparency.” This, of course, is following the Progressive Conservative’s stark change in cannabis policy for the province after defeating the Ontario Liberal government in 2018.
