You know things have gotten absurdly bad in world politics when John Oliver's 'Catheter Cowboy' might be the only voice of reason against starting nuclear war with Iran. Oliver recently tapped the cowboy - a running gag in commercials that Oliver has run during Fox News shows that Trump watches - in hopes of saving the Iran nuclear deal.
Trump has long detested the deal despite the fact that it's received widespread support from American allies like Germany, France and the UK, as well as not-so-friendly nations like Russia. All of them stress that the deal's provisions will prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons for at least 10 years. Without the deal, the weapons program can restart immediately and prepare a warhead within months.
But that doesn't seem to matter to Trump or Iran hawks like Mike Pompeo - Trump's nominee for Secretary of State, who has accused Iran of weaselling out of the deal's provisions but hasn't offered evidence to substantiate those serious allegations. And then there's National Security Adviser John Bolton, who stunned policymakers last year by calling on America to overthrow the current regime in Iran and install a new government.
And the worst part is, there's not much we can do but sit and watch as the world teeters toward nuclear war.
"If this deal dies, and Iran resumes its nuclear weapons program, it could then start a nuclear arms race in the Middle East. And the problem here is, I cannot offer you much hope. There is not really a 'write your congressman' solution to this. We could be in serious trouble because two of Trump's top advisers are, like him, dead set against this deal. And they're getting backup from Sean Hannity, whose show the president watches so much, advisers refer to him as the 'shadow chief of staff.' Hannity hates this deal too."
But Hannity could turn into the Achilles heel for Iran hawks.
"There is not really a way to get a moderating voice into this conversation short of buying time on Hannity's show this week and running an ad," Oliver noted. That's where the 'Catheter Cowboy' comes in. In the latest ad, which will run during Hannity's show this week, the cowboy interrupts a family dinner to plead with Trump.
“Hey there, Donald...I’m a cowboy, don’t like pain when I cath. And I’m here to tell you, the Iran deal may not be perfect, but it helps restrict Iran’s ability to start making a bomb for at least 10 years! You blow up the deal, and that turns into zero years. And if I’ve learned one thing from all these years of cowboyin’ and cathin’, it’s that zero is way less than 10...Don’t do it, Donald. Don’t do it.”
