John Oliver Talks Trump’s Military Parade, Royal Weddings And The Winter Olympics

John Oliver is gearing up to return to his HBO series "Last Week Tonight" on February 18th. To warm up, the late-night host stopped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert for a chat about the latest news. Colbert - who introduces his guest as being "best known as the voice of Vanity Smurf” - talks with Oliver about the most recent developments in Trumpland, including his proposed military parade. “We had military parades across India,” deadpans the British Oliver, who also thinks that “[Trump's] gonna watch the Royal Wedding and think 'I want one of those'."

Then in a second bit, the two hosts talk about the upcoming Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea. Oliver talks about British athlete Eddie "The Eagle" Edwards, who got into ski jumping before there was a qualifying requirement to hit the jump in the Olympics.  “A crazy British guy just decided ‘how hard can ski jumping be?’," explains Oliver, "and he f***ing learned."

Citing supply shortages, Ontario announced Thursday that they would now be taking a “phased approach” to issuing cannabis retail licenses. Despite earlier claims that they would not be capping the number of licenses for retail pot shops, they announced Thursday that they would, in fact, be limiting the number of licenses dispensed in April to 25. The province says that the licenses will be issued though a lottery system overseen by a third party to “ensure equality and transparency.” This, of course, is following the Progressive Conservative’s stark change in cannabis policy for the province after defeating the Ontario Liberal government in 2018.
