Watch John Oliver Nail The Absurdity Of America's Cannabis Laws

Earlier this month, John Oliver nailed the absurdity of America's cannabis laws in a Last Week Tonight feature on marijuana.

Oliver covers cannabis history from the War on Drugs launched by President Richard Nixon ("the Mozart of racially motivated lawmaking") to today, where state laws frequently clash with federal prohibition, federal barriers obstruct research on the medicinal value of marijuana, and workplace cannabis policies unjustly punish medical-marijuana patients.

The feature basically highlights everything that's wrong with America's marijuana laws in 16 minutes. But it ends on a positive note as Oliver highlights the efforts of the new Cannabis Caucus in Congress, which was formed earlier this year by lawmakers dedicated to pushing their colleagues toward repealing prohibition. Check it out.

After making progress on marijuana reform, the legalization movement has stalled in two New England states. Cannabis became legal in Vermont last July, but state lawmakers did not put a regulated market for marijuana in place at that time. So while adults in Vermont can possess, grow and consume cannabis, they can't buy it legally.
