“Star Wars” is the biggest movie franchise in the world, taking fans through adventures in space “a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.” When the first film “Episode IV: A New Hope” released in 1977, it became a worldwide pop cultural phenomenon that was followed by “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi”, the original “Star Wars” trilogy. The second trilogy began in 2015 with “The Force Awakens”, pushing “Star Wars” to become one of the biggest movie franchises in the world. This may partly be because it is one of the best movies to watch while high, especially in theaters. “Star Wars” is very popular among cannabis consumers because there are many strains and marijuana merchandise based on the movies, which begs the questions, is there marijuana in the “Star Wars” universe?
First, they certainly used marijuana to create a galaxy far, far away because the tale about the origin of the name “Wookiee” involves marijuana. While filming the first movie, voice actor Terry McGovern was smoking marijuana with “Star Wars” creator George Lucas and friend Bill Wookey, when he ad-libbed “Wookiee”, “I think I just ran over a Wookey back there.” Carrie Fisher also admitted to smoking cannabis with Harrison Ford while they were together in the films, but there is no implication that their characters smoke cannabis in the films together. Some characters smoke the drug “death sticks” though, which is a mild hallucinogen that produces a twisted version of reality in bright colors. If they smoke hallucinogens in “Star Wars”, they have to smoke marijuana too, because Nien Nunb certainly looks high most of the time.
