On a really, really hot, melt-the-asphalt kind of day, smoking feels about as appealing as scarfing down a bowl of hot tomato soup. Why would you do that to yourself?
Better to find some shade: ideally in proximity to cheap, ice-cold beverages, and think up another way to get your chill on. If you really don't feel like handling anything hotter than you are already, behold the perfect solution: cannabis-infused ice cream.
It's great on three levels: taps into that kiddie sweet-thing reward centre, no smelly, hot smoke, and guaranteed to cool your fevered brow while also engendering further munchies. One warning: given the punch these compulsively-snackable flavours pack, you're going to want to grab an extra spoon and share.
1. Coconut Lemon Zest
This vegan offering from Drip is a refreshing, simple summer treat: just coconut cream, agave, lemon juice, vanilla paste, lemon zest, cannabis extract, and not much else. Company founders Kathy Bixel and Julie Guirado-Nys whip up a range of elegant homemade flavours including Salted Caramel, Cookies and Cream, and Honey Lavender using fairly traded non-GMO ingredients. Intended for medical consumers, you can snack moderately on a few spoonfuls of the regular-strength 25mg variety, or get a serious brain freeze with 75mg extra-strength. Hand-crafted in Portland, Oregon, Drip is available in around 40 dispensaries from Selma to Eugene.
2. Passion Fruit Sorbet
Advertised as "super premium ice cream with a healthy dose of pot inside," the California-based makers of Cannabis Creamery Ice Cream say the idea started when the Grateful Dead asked them to make a "special" ice cream flavour for a big party. Soon, you'll be able to get 4 oz cups of classic vanilla, chocolate, and cookie dough, with vegan passion fruit sorbet and ice cream sandwiches on the way. While each cup is currently 60mg, Cannabis Creamery says they'll "be serving stronger products in the near future once we're up and running."
3. Peanut Butter & Jelly
Not to be confused with Totally Baked, the brownie-loaded revamp of Ben & Jerry's classic "Half Baked," with chocolate chip cookies (instead of cookie dough): Fully Baked is its own company, and they're offering up creamy, delicious ice cream with considerably more kick than the grocery store freezer-aisle variety. These San Pedro-based ice cream crafters have mastered staple flavours like "Go Fudge Yourself" and "Berries And Bud'; however, more experimental Peanut Butter Jelly Time sounds like a great highdea to us. Available, appropriately, at dispensaries including Skippy's Hot Box.
