Illinois Governor Reaffirms Commitment to Marijuana Reform During Inaugural Address

J.B. Pritzker (D) wants the people to know cannabis legalization is still on his to-do list as Illinois governor.

Legalizing cannabis in Illinois was a central part of Governor Pritzker's gubernatorial campaign. Beyond the obvious economic drivers for developing a regulated cannabis market, Pritzker has called cannabis legalization a key part of reducing racial inequality in the state. During his inaugural address as the state's new governor on Monday, Pritzker told the audience the legalization is still part of the plan.

"In the interests of keeping the public safe from harm, expanding true justice in our criminal justice system, and advancing economic inclusion, I will work with the legislature to legalize, tax and regulate the sale of recreational cannabis in Illinois," Pritzker said during his speech.

Pritzker beat out incumbent Illinois Governor and known marijuana opponent Bruce Rauner (R) in last November's election. Just one day after winning the election Pritzker told local news that cannabis legalization is something he wants to begin working on immediately.

"That's something we can work on nearly right away," Pritzker said.

In fact, one Illinois Democrat has already filed a legalization bill. And since Democrats control both the state Senate and House, we should see legalization come to the Prairie State sooner than later, making Illinois the 11th state to legalize recreational cannabis.
