We’ve all experienced that moment of total, gut-wrenching terror upon opening a cell phone bill and finding that we “roamed” a little too freely on a recent vacation.

A Hong Kong-based start-up has made it so you never have to experience that nightmare again.

Tink Labs is the producer of handy [sic], a custom-made phone that provides guests at participating hotels with unlimited international and local calling as well as free Internet – within and without the hotel – throughout their trip.

When you check into one of the 1,000-plus hotels in Europe or Asia partnered with Tink Labs – think Hilton, AccorHotels, Intercontinental, and Marriott – you’re immediately given your handy (yes, we know) at no extra charge. Along with unlimited calling and Internet, the phones also come equipped with curated city guides, a speed dial to reach the hotel’s staff and services and local emergency information.

“Hotel guests enjoy being able to make free calls while receiving insights that allow them to live like a local; meanwhile, hoteliers benefit from being able to stay connected to - and improve the experience of - their guests, resulting in increased sales of hotel services,” said handy founder Terence Kwok.

Kwok created handy after struggling to find free Wi-Fi on holiday and wondering why there wasn’t a digital tool to help tourists feel like locals without gutting their bank accounts.

Tink Labs hopes to have the devices – which automatically erase user data upon checkout –in one million hotel rooms around the world by the end of the year. The company also plans to expand to the U.S. thanks to high demand from American hotels.
