Bill Maher Says Heroin Is A Gateway To Being A Republican

The theory that marijuana is a gateway to harder drugs has been debunked. But a new gateway drug theory has emerged to take its place. "Kids, don't do heroin: it's a gateway to being a Republican," warned Bill Maher last week. The Real Time host was commenting on the surprising prevalence of opioid abuse in states that voted for President Donald Trump in the 2016 election.

"Of the 14 states with the highest number of painkiller prescriptions per person, they all went for Trump," Maher noted. "Trump won 80 percent of the states that had the biggest heroin problem, and the counties that he won in Ohio and Pennsylvania that went for Obama last time, are the ones that are wracked by opiate abuse."

So he's suggesting a new term for Trump Republicans: pill-billies. "Let's stop calling Trump voters 'idiots' and 'fools' and call them what they are: Fucking drug addicts," Maher said.

And to help them out, he recommended switching from opioids to cannabis. "[Y]ou're doing the wrong drugs," Maher said. "Stick to the stuff that comes out of the ground. Ninety percent of you are farmers. You grow, fertilize, harvest eat and for all I know fuck your own crops - you never thought to smoke them?"

After making progress on marijuana reform, the legalization movement has stalled in two New England states. Cannabis became legal in Vermont last July, but state lawmakers did not put a regulated market for marijuana in place at that time. So while adults in Vermont can possess, grow and consume cannabis, they can't buy it legally.
