The White House Correspondents’ Association was established in 1914 to promote the interests of reporters and correspondents covering the White House. The Association hosted its first dinner years later in 1920 and Calvin Coolidge became the first president to attend in 1924. Since then, every commander-in-chief has made an appearance at the dinner, but this year, Trump and his White House staff will not be attending. The dinner will proceed as usual however, with comedian Hasan Minhaj as the featured performer. In the past, many performers have roasted the president, but the Association chose Minhaj because they know he’ll focus on the dinner’s theme, which is the First Amendment and the importance of the free press.
