Former Big Pharma CEO Pleads Guilty to Bribing Doctors to Prescribe Opioids

If you somehow don't think that Big Pharma is an evil entity pushing dangerous drugs on the American people to maximize profits, then this story will probably change your opinion.

The former CEO of Insys Therapeutics Inc., a major pharmaceutical company in the United States, has pled guilty in a scheme to bribe doctors so they would prescribe opioids. Former CEO Michael Babich pled guilty to conspiracy and mail fraud, and is cooperating with prosecutors as a government witness. Five other Insys executives are going on trial in less than three weeks for their participation in the scheme, so presumably Babich will be testifying against them.

According to prosecutors, from 2012 to 2015 Babich and other Insys executives bribed doctors to prescribe Subsys, a painkiller oral spray that contained fentanyl. The doctors would be paid by being given speaking engagements, but these events were usually shams made up just to justify paying the doctors.

Ironically, Babich's wife was also an Insys sales representative who also pled guilty in a DIFFERENT case where she offered bribes to doctors to for prescribing the company's medications.

Insys paid a $150 million fine to the U.S. Justice Department last year as part of a settlement for these various bribery schemes. So we're sure going forward they will be epitome of ethics and moral behavior in the pharmaceutical industry.
