Comedian and actor Zach Galifianakis is best known for his role in the mega-hit comedy “The Hangover” and for his bushy beard. Galifianakis started his comedy career by performing stand-up in the back of a burger restaurant in New York City’s Times Square. He continued performing stand-up, eventually landing a role in 1996 as Bobby in “Boston Common” alongside Anthony Clark. Following a number of TV and movie roles, Galifianakis got his big break in 2009 with “The Hangover”, where he plays soon to be brother-in-law Alan, who tags along creating more problems. In addition to starring in two more “The Hangover” movies, Galifianakis made a bigger name for himself by appearing in several movies as the stand-out funny character. Some of these films include “Dinner for Schmucks” with Steve Carell and Paul Rudd, “Up in the Air” with George Clooney and Anna Kendrick, and “Due Date” which he starred in alongside Robert Downey Jr. and Jamie Foxx. Now, after starring in many movies, including the critically acclaimed “Birdman” with Michael Keaton, Galifianakis is producing and creating his own show, “Baskets”, about Chip Baskets who hopes to keep his dream of becoming a professional clown alive after failing a prestigious French clown college. His performance received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series and his co-star Louie Anderson won an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in 2016 as Mrs. Baskets. Galifianakis is also appearing in the new “A Wrinkle in Time” movie as The Happy Medium.
Over a decade ago, before moving to Los Angeles, Galifianakis was living in Vancouver where he had a girlfriend named Watermelon who sold marijuana cookies on the beach. He also said that when he accepted the role in “G-Force”, the Disney action thriller about a specially trained squad of guinea pigs, he was stoned. He might have gotten to this level of stoned while eating some marijuana chocolates, walking around, and listening to Fleet Foxes, which he would certainly prefer over being a celebrity. Then, while discussing Proposition 19 on Bill Maher’s show “Real Time”, Galifianakis took out a joint, lit it, and began smoking to show that you can smoke marijuana and not act crazy.
