John Oliver is a comedian, writer, producer, and political commentator most known for his HBO weekly show “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver”. Before Oliver produced his own show, he started as a stand-up comedian performing at a comedy festival. From there, Oliver continued to collaborate with fellow comedian Andy Zaltzman, who he later produced a comedy show with. Then in 2006, Oliver was hired as a cast member on “The Daily Show” as the “UK Correspondent”, so Oliver moved to New York City. He continued to perform stand-up while at “The Daily Show”, where he eventually also became a writer. By 2008, Oliver produced his first comedy special on Comedy Central, “John Oliver: Terrifying Times”, while also receiving positive reviews from “The Daily Show”. In 2013, Oliver guest hosted the show for Stewart, and some suggested he should eventually host. Just a few months after hosting though, HBO announced it was producing Oliver’s own late-night show. Now, the show has been nominated for 13 Emmy Awards and has won 6 awards.
“Last Week Tonight” and Oliver dedicated a whole segment of his show to marijuana laws, because it’s a complex and contradictory system preventing the industry from growing. Throughout the segment, Oliver makes sure to do what he does best, break down the issues and make fun of them, starting with President Richard Nixon, who began the War on Drugs to stop marijuana, “...and naturally, it was Richard Nixon, the Mozart of racially motivated lawmaking, who targeted it in his War on Drugs.” Oliver continues to make fun of the ridiculous marijuana laws in the United States, while joking that marijuana can be the gateway drug to peaceful sleep, rigorous exercise, and community service.
