Does Cannabis Enhance Sex? The Experts Weigh In

Some people swear by having a toke before 'bedtime activities,' claiming cannabis enhances their sexual encounters. So, is there anything to this? The experts weighed in during a recent roundtable arranged by CNN.

It's Probably An Indirect Thing

Good sex has a lot to do with mood, said sex therapist Amanda Pasciucco. Less anxiety and more self-confidence are two of the ingredients that lead to more and better sexual experiences.

"People who use marijuana may have more sex because they put less pressure on themselves when they are high, so they don't have the same performance anxiety as those who are sober," Pasciucco told CNN.

And when people are relaxed, pleasurable sensations are increased while pain is subdued, according to Peter Barsoom, Founder of 1906, which makes premium cannabis edibles.

"This can lead to increased arousal and make sex even more enjoyable."

Don't Be Afraid To Experiment

Figuring out what kind of cannabis best enhances your sex life takes some time. So you should be prepared to try different strains to see what works for you, according to sexologist Nick Karras.

"Every person has a unique makeup both psychologically and physically, and for cannabis to help improve sexuality, you must find the type that works for you," explains Karras. "I recommend experimenting with a small amount of indica strains, sativa strains and a hybrid of both to see what works best."

He also suggests that the way you decide to take cannabis can be factor in this, too.

"I definitely recommend smoking or vaping as you're learning how to use cannabis, because you can overshoot with edibles and have an uncomfortable experience."

Consuming too much cannabis - especially strains with a high THC content - can actually exacerbate anxiety for some, so knowing your limits and what works for you is important. Barsoom suggests that "low to moderate doses" tend to work better for sexual enhancement.

You Don't Have To Smoke It

There are a number of cannabis-sex products on the market you can choose to use, too. These include 1906's aforementioned chocolates, or something like the Kikoko teas. There also weed-infused lubes and lotions that you might want to check out if you're interested in other options.

Cannabis for Beginners - What are the different names for cannabis?

After a battery of tests and misdiagnoses, I was finally diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease twelve years ago, and thus began a long battle with trial-and-error medical treatments. I changed my diet several times, even though my doctors didn’t seem confident it would change much (it didn’t), went to physical therapy for pain-related issues, and took so many different pharmaceuticals I can’t even begin to recall each and every one. My days were foggy due to side effects from pharmaceuticals, such as steroids, that made me feel worse than I did before I even took them.
