CVS, the largest pharmacy chain in the United States, announced on Wednesday that they will soon begin selling a number of cannabis-derived CBD products 800 stores across 8 states.
Alabama, California, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, and Tennessee are among the states that will be part of the initial roll-out of products, which currently only include CBD-based topicals.
This announcement comes just a few months after the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill, which legalized the cultivation of industrialized hemp and hemp-derived CBD.
There are still some kinks to work out in the legislation, and the Federal Drug Administration continues to ban the additive’s use in food and beverage products. In the meantime, CVS is being careful to ensure that they are “complying with applicable laws and that meet CVS's high standards for quality," a spokesman said in a statement.
The company has yet to confirm when these products will be available.
