Copenhagen Police Are Not Happy About People Driving Scooters Under the Influence

Danish police have started cracking down on a particular crowd of impaired drivers—those who are a little too drunk or high to be riding a scooter.

Everybody knows that getting behind the wheel when you're drunk or stoned is never a good idea. Not only is it incredibly dangerous, but you also run the risk of getting slapped with a pretty hefty fine and perhaps losing your license. And if you're in Denmark, you'll face the exact same 2,000-krone (US$300) fine for driving a scooter under the influence that you would for drunk driving.

And authorities aren't messing around in the Nordic nation either. Just over this past weekend, police in Copenhagen arrested 28 people for operating one of the city's public use electric scooters while under the influence. The vast majority - 24 - were for alcohol. The rest involved cannabis.

The crackdown comes as Copenhagen locals have become increasingly annoyed by the popularity of the public use scooters. Unlike the public use bikes you sometimes see in big cities, these scooters don't need to be returned to anywhere in particular. This has led people to leave them poorly parked in inconsiderate places.

And the fact that people are driving these things while under the influence hasn't done much to make people feel good about them either.

So if you're visiting Copenhagen, or any other city with public use scooters, and you find yourself a bit tipsy, you might want to consider whether the money you just saved by not taking an Uber is really worth the possible DUI fine.
