Comic Sans is one of the world’s most hated fonts. Although there aren’t any statistics to support this claim, there are multiple online groups and a giant Twitter following dedicated to banning the text. But why? The font’s creator, Vincent Connare, doesn’t have the answer to that question because he says, “I’m proud of Comic Sans.” When Connare was working for Microsoft’s typography team, there was a program, Microsoft Bob, designed to make computers more accessible to children. While using the program, Connare noticed that the cartoon dog talked with a speech bubble in Times New Roman. Conceptually, this didn’t make sense to Connare, because simply, dogs don’t talk in Times. So, Connare flipped through graphic novels for inspiration, eventually leading him to create Comic Sans.
