There are a handful of self-identified marijuana users in Hollywood and other entertainment venues. These include Seth Rogen, Snoop Dogg and many others. But there are also many celebrities that people assume are stoners who either are not stoners, or we just don’t really have any evidence to prove that they are.
Here are eight of those celebrities you probably assume is a stoner:
1. Klay Thompson
Klay Thompson is a member of the Golden State Warriors, the reigning back-to-back NBA champs. Thompson’s frequently mentioned as one of the biggest stoners in the NBA, and his nickname is even “Big Smokey.” But despite being arrested for marijuana possession back in college, Thompson seems to at least somewhat deny actually being a stoner. In fact, he even says he only supports medical, not recreational, marijuana, which is just another reason to hate the Warriors.
2. Matthew McConaughey
McConaughey is another celebrity everyone assumes is a stoner thanks to his chill, zen-like attitude. And while he was arrested back in 1999 for marijuana possession, he doesn’t seem to really talk about every really using cannabis (except for the time Snoop Dogg tricked him into using it).
3. James Franco
Franco not only is believed to be a stoner, but he’s also frequently played them in various on-screen roles. But the actor says he really doesn’t smoke marijuana anymore, although he’s given some conflicting reports where he says he used to do it and others where he says he’s never done it. The actor doth protest too much, methinks.
4. Woody Harrelson
This is sort of cheating, because Harrelson is actually a renowned marijuana user. But he did say recently that he’s given up using cannabis, but that doesn’t seem to have changed his stoner persona too much.
5. Brad Pitt
Pitt is another chill actor who’s persona leads many people to believe he’s a stoner. But the actor claims he hasn’t used cannabis since the 1990’s, although some gossip tabloids claim the reason his marriage with Angelina Jolie ended is because he was smoking too much for her liking.
There’s actually a debate over whether Drake uses marijuana. In fact, there are conspiracy theories that Drake only pretends to like cannabis because he’s a rapper, and that he’s actually a super lightweight. They use an incident where the rapper got too high in Amsterdam to perform. Freaking Jimi Hendrix used to perform after using LSD, and Drake can’t sing because he took a little too much weed? Also there are videos analyzing his joint hitting abilities, and they are not favorable.
7. Abraham Lincoln
There are a number of former presidents who are known for using marijuana, from Bill Clinton and Obama to Thomas Jefferson. But there’s a famous quote attributed to Abraham Lincoln that says, “Two of my favorite things are sitting on my front porch smoking a pipe of sweet hemp, and playing my Hohner harmonica.” Except Hohner harmonicas didn’t exist until two years after the year the quote is usually cited as occurring. So perhaps Honest Abe was truly honest in all his habits.
8. Bill Gates
Gates’ rival Steve Jobs was a well-known marijuana user, and there’s a lot of evidence that Gates did as well. One biography written about the Microsoft founder claims he often used cannabis, and he’s been very vocal in supporting legalization efforts. However, Gates has refused to answer any questions about his marijuana use, which really just makes it seem more likely that he has, but we can’t really prove it.
