Could Cannabis Cure Alzheimer's?

Marijuana might be bad for short-term memory loss, but scientists are saying it may now be the cure for Alzheimer’s.

According to researchers at the Salk Institute, THC and other cannabinoids can help remove dangerous dementia proteins from brain cells. One of these proteins is amyloid beta, which creates a dangerous plaque in the brains of patients with dementia that destroys nerve cells. When a small levels of THC reduces the amount of the protein in nerve cells, allowing them to survive.

However, strict drug laws are preventing researchers from studying this further. Applications for cannabis studies can take up to six months just to get approved.

Latest.

Because it has been illegal or stigmatized for decades, the body of cannabis research available is, in many ways, incomplete. But Canada’s federal government is taking advantage of the country’s status as the only G7 country to have legalized marijuana and addressing that issue. It was announced yesterday that nearly 25 million dollars will be used to fund cannabis research in Canada.
