If you're not familiar with the cult classic, Bill (played by Alex Winters) and Ted (played by Keanu Reeves, who turns 52 today) are a duo of underachieving metalheads who spend more time headbanging than hitting the books in high school. But the destiny of the human race depends on their band succeeding, so outside forces (led by the late George Carlin) intervene to fire up these burnouts.
In Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989), the two go back in time to collect historical figures for a school assignment. In the sequel - Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey (1991) - they have to come back from the dead when a tyrant from the future kills them off in order to thwart their destiny. And in 2010, rumors circulated that a third feature would focus on the grown up duo working on a song that would save the world.
Some scoffed at the idea, but it gained credibility when in 2013 when Reeves - who became a Hollywood star after hanging up his electric guitar - was onboard with the project. During a 2013 Reddit AMA, he wrote, "we are working on trying to get Bill & Ted 3. There's a script and we are trying to put it together."
Things went quiet after that, but Reeves confirmed the project was in the works during a March 2015 appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show. "The writers wrote a script which is a really cool idea," he said, "so we’re trying to get it made." He added that the delays were just part of show business: "putting a movie together is tough, [but] we’ve got high hopes for it."
And in April 2016, Alex Winters told Forbes that they were just waiting on the green light to start shooting.
"We have a script, we have a director, we have a studio – we’re just trying to nail down a start date." But he also threw a little cold water on the project. "This is Hollywood so I don’t believe it’s happening until it’s coming out on VOD but we’re all working on the film everyday at the moment in terms of the pre-prep type work so it’s an active project. Hopefully we’ll be shooting it shortly."
So don't hold your breath, but things are looking good for Stallyns fans. And if you need something to tide you over until the threequel's released, here's Keanu and Winter spoofing The Seventh Seal (1957) in "Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey."
